Preliminary Examinations for Graduate Students
Preliminary examinations must be passed for the MS(II) as well as for the PhD degree. First year graduate students have to decide which courses to take and what subject areas he/she wants to be examined in for the preliminary exam. Courses and exam areas should match the student's general research interests and their choice should be made in consultation with the Graduate adviser or if assigned, the dissertation adviser. In most cases the student will choose overlapping courses and exam areas.
Below are samples of past preliminary examinations.
